Gavin J.D. Smith

Dr Gavin Smith is an Associate Professor in the Program in Emerging Infectious Diseases at Duke-NUS Graduate Medical School Singapore. His primary training was in ecology and evolution and he obtained his PhD from The University of Hong Kong in 2003. Dr Smith’s research focus is on the ecology, genetic and antigenic evolution, population dynamics, molecular epidemiology and interspecies transmission of emerging infectious diseases, particularly influenza. My research is directed at efforts to better understand virus disease ecosystems in Asia, specifically the animal-human interface, to inform and enhance disease control. In 2007 Dr Smith was awarded a 7-year Career Development Award by the US NIAID/NIH for his work on influenza.
